Milling

Milling in the most general terms is the process of removing metal (or other material) by applying a rotating cutting tool to an essentially stationary workpiece.

The two most common types of milling machines are Vertical and Horizontal. The Vertical milling machine is generally more versatile, in that the head of the smaller machines can be tilted in various directions, thereby obtaining an additional axis with the movement of the quill. These machines can often be used for drilling, reaming, tapping, boring and counterboring operations, as well as straight milling.

The Horizontal milling machine, however, is capable of removing enormous amounts of stock quickly, due to the tremendous rigidity available when the milling arbor can be supported at both ends.
